Jewish Israelis to Turkey dropped precipitously following tensions stemming from the 2010 flotilla incident, coupled by ongoing terrorist attacks in the country.

Karlov was one of the first to respond to a letter Israel's ambassador to Turkey sent to colleagues, and apparently it was one of his last official acts before being killed.

Usually, the only times when there is major media interest in the presentation of credentials is when the ambassador in question is from the United States, Egypt or Jordan.

The newly appointed Turkish Ambassador to Israel, Kemal Okem, is expected to take up his duties in Tel Aviv next week.

The announcement of Turkey’s new ambassador to Israel is expected at around the same time. The two nations have not had ambassadors in each other’s countries since 2010.

The agreement, which was already approved in Israel by the security cabinet, now must come for approval before the entire cabinet, something expected to be only a formality.

“Israel has met our terms, paving the way to normalize ties,” he said. “Therefore, we must do this as soon as possible.”
